Nickel Exploration Project - West Raglan, Québec

Nickel Exploration Project

The Cape Smith Belt in northern Québec is one of the most prospective areas in the world to discover new nickel deposits. Recognizing this, in early 2003 Knight entered into an agreement with Anglo American Exploration (Canada) Limited ("AAEC") on their 720 square kilometer West Raglan Project. Knight completed all of its earn-in obligations in 2005 and the nickel exploration project is now a fully consummated joint venture with Knight holding a 45% interest in the property.

Xstrata's Raglan nickel mine is located 90 kilometers east of the eastern margin of the West Raglan Project. Resources, reserves and mined ore to date at Raglan total 35 million tonnes averaging 2.9% nickel and 0.8% copper with significant platinum group elements. Recent exploration results have added significantly to this total. The Raglan nickel deposits have been traditionally characterized as clusters of multiple, relatively small and high-grade lenses that cumulatively comprise the reported resources and reserves (e.g. Katinniq Deposit). A significant new development in the type of deposit that can be found in the “Raglan Formation” is demonstrated by Xstrata’s recent discovery of large, high-grade lenses at Zone 5-8 that contain typical Raglan sulphides, in excess of 10 million tonnes.

The known nickel deposits in the Cape Smith Belt occur in two different settings: in the “Raglan Formation" at the base of the Chukotat Group (e.g. Xstrata: Katinniq, Zone 5-8 and Knight/Anglo: Frontier) and within the stratigraphically lower Povungnituk Group. All of Xstrata's resources and reserves are hosted within the “Raglan Formation” and occur in ten separate deposits over a 55 kilometre strike length.
